Online conference on economic development in border areas
On the morning of August 16, 2021, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Industry and Trade chaired an online conference on border area development with 25 localities sharing land borders with 3 countries: China, Laos, Cambodia. Attending the conference at Lang Son province point were Mrs. Doan Thu Ha, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, and the representatives of leaders of relevant departments and agencies.
According to a report of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the context of the economy facing many challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in the first 6 months of 2021 of 25 border provinces still reached positive growth rate, of which 20 provinces have GRDP growth higher than the national average (5.64%), 5 provinces have growth below the national average. Industrial production continued to recover, 13 out of 25 border areas had a higher growth rate of industrial production development than the national average (9.3%). Agricultural production is maintained. External relations are well maintained by the provinces and authorities of the border areas, creating favorable conditions for maintaining the pandemic prevention and clearance model, ensuring uninterrupted cross-border trade...
Speaking at the conference, Mrs. Doan Thu Ha, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Lang Son province affirmed that, as an area of transshipment and organization of import and export services, Lang Son province has been implementing a set of solutions, both to strictly control the pandemic and to recover and develop socio-economic as well as to promote growth. In the first 7 months of 2021, the total import-export turnover through the province reached 2.5 billion USD, an increase of 53.2% over the same period in 2020. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade continue to study and complete the policies on improving management in border trading, study changes and supplement priority policies for border localities, allocate funds for localities to invest in border infrastructure, invest in building a digital economy, digital border gates for border trade activities...
Concluding the conference, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade, agreed on 8 groups of solutions, including focusing on developing strategic plans for industrial, agricultural, trade and service development, and soon integrating them into the planning of the province as well as the planning of the central ministries on economic development of border provinces, researching and proposing mechanisms and policies strong enough to attract investors, prioritizing the allocation of budget capital to invest in essential infrastructure, make better use of external relations with other countries through development cooperation mechanisms, promptly upgrade and open new border gates in accordance with bilateral agreements, continue to improve production capacity, further strengthen inspection and control, fight smuggling and commercial fraud, and create flavorable conditions for enterprises to develop./.
